The Vision

Overview

Linear Park is incredibly important. It is a green oasis that protects our suburbs from flooding; it provides habitat for birds and wildlife; and it is a place for all of us to enjoy being active and in nature.

It is beautiful. But it is also underutilised.

While various sections have been improved by individual councils, a master plan approach with investment from all levels of government is required for it to reach its full potential.

The Linear Park Connection Project will significantly improve the amenity of Linear Park and the River Torrens while protecting and enhancing its wild, natural state for future generations.

This is an opportunity to turn our river and our riverbank into a place that more people can enjoy every day and even a place of international significance, with this project supporting any future bid to have the Adelaide Parklands receive UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

Community Recreational Opportunities

We want to see recreational options along the trail improved to give locals more ways to enjoy being outside.

Improved community infrastructure could include better lighting and pathways to make walking and cycling safer; more BBQS, picnic shelters and public toilets; outdoor fitness equipment; and more nature play areas for the kids.

We also want to work with private businesses to see kayak hire, bike hire, coffee carts and more popping up along Linear Park.

Environmental improvements to the river could even make recreational fishing a possibility in the future.

Connection To the City and Suburbs

Stretching almost 47 kilometers, Linear Park is a green corridor that surrounds our river and connects the hills to the sea.

It connects us from Athelstone in the Adelaide Hills through to the Adelaide CBD and continues all the way to the river mouth at Henley Beach.

Our vision is to see more people use this path as a connection point to nearby suburbs, the city, and even as far as the beach.

We want to improve paths, lighting and signage to make it a more enjoyable, safer experience - whether people are going for a morning run, cycling to work or university or using Linear Park to get to the footy.

Care for our Environment

We want to see the look and health of the River Torrens and its riverbank drastically improved.

Our plan is to improve the water quality by clearing away rubbish and pollutants and replacing introduced species with native vegetation.

This will improve the look and health of our river and attract more native wildlife. It will also allow us to re-introduce native species like the much-loved (and rarely seen) platypus.

Our vision also includes planting more trees to create an urban forest that will cool our suburbs and city and reduce the effects of climate change for generations to come.

UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

The Linear Park Connection Project is an opportunity to not only transform this space for all of us locally but to turn it into a place of international significance.

While other cities have a central park, Linear Park and the extensive parklands surrounding Adelaide are truly unique.

This project will support any future bid to have the Adelaide Parklands receive UNESCO World Heritage recognition - something the Liberal Party has campaigned for at a state and federal level.

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity that would boost tourism and ensure our parklands are protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
